3 Marketing Mistakes You're Making & How to Fix Them: Strategy Tips to Attract Clients

Marketing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be confusing. It doesn’t have to be complex.

But let’s be real—many of us as Christian women entrepreneurs are struggling with it.

After connecting with so many women in my community, I’ve realized that marketing is often the thing holding us back from hitting consistent five-figure months. It’s not that we aren’t gifted. It’s not that our ideas aren’t powerful. It’s simply that we don’t understand how to market in a way that feels clear, strategic, and Spirit-led.

And sis, that’s costing us.

If sales are the lifeline of your business, then marketing is the oxygen. We must market our services to make money and steward these God-given visions well. God didn’t call us into entrepreneurship to struggle or to barely make ends meet. He called us to be fruitful, to multiply, and to walk in overflow so we can make kingdom impact.

So in this blog, I want to simplify marketing for you. You’ll learn:

  • What marketing really is

  • The three biggest marketing mistakes I see

  • Practical tips to make marketing feel doable (not dreadful)

Let’s get into it:

What Is Marketing, Really?

Here’s how I like to look at it:

Marketing is the gospel of your offer.

Think about it—just like the gospel is the good news of salvation, your marketing is the good news of your solution. It's how you let people know, “Hey sis, I see your problem… and I can help.”

Marketing is not manipulation or hype. It’s sharing value. It’s connecting with the person God has called you to serve and showing up with what He’s placed in your hands.

3 Common Marketing Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

1. You Don’t Know Your People

The number one reason your marketing may not be working is simple: you don’t know who you’re talking to.

Many of us are throwing content out into the world without truly understanding our audience. What are her pain points? Her daily routine? Her desires, fears, goals?

When you truly understand the woman God is calling you to serve, marketing becomes easier—and more effective.

2. You're on the Wrong Platform (Or Too Many at Once)

Just because a platform is popular doesn’t mean it’s where your people are.

I learned this the hard way. For a long time, I was pushing content on social media and not seeing results. But when I finally tuned into where my people were—podcasts, LinkedIn, and email—it shifted everything.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be in the right place with the right message.

3. You Haven’t Nurtured Your Audience

Too often we create a great offer, slap a price tag on it, and expect people to buy—without ever warming them up.

Your audience needs to trust you first. They need to know you get them. If you haven’t consistently offered free value, positioned yourself as a thought leader, or created a space for community… you’re not ready to sell.

Marketing starts long before the sale.

3 Tips to Simplify Your Marketing Strategy

Let’s make this practical. Here are three steps you can take this week to start marketing smarter (not harder):

1. Do Market Research

This is non-negotiable. It doesn’t matter how inspired your idea is—if you haven’t talked to the people you want to serve, it’s not ready yet.

Market research helps you understand your ideal client’s real-time needs, language, and struggles.

My favorite method? Set up 5–10 quick 20-minute interviews with women who fit your audience. Or create a survey and offer a small giveaway to encourage responses. Dig into what’s keeping them up at night, what they’ve tried, and what they’re still looking for.

That’s content gold, sis.

2. Choose One Platform and Master It

Preferably one that allows for long-form or evergreen content—like podcasting, blogging, YouTube, or email.

Social media is great for visibility, but it’s not always where the real connection happens. With longer-form content, you get space to go deeper, build trust, and repurpose your best ideas.

For me, my podcast and email list are home base. That’s where I serve and nurture—and that’s where sales come from.

3. Nurture Your People and Build Community

Stop focusing only on the sale. Focus on the relationship.

Start a community where your ideal clients can gather and grow together. This could be a Facebook group, a private podcast list, an Instagram broadcast channel, or even a segment of your email list.

Position yourself as the go-to person in your niche by showing up consistently with real, helpful content. Over time, people won’t just follow you—they’ll trust you. And that trust is what leads to sales.

Final Thoughts + Homework

Marketing doesn’t have to be messy. It doesn’t have to feel fake. And it definitely doesn’t have to feel heavy. But it does require intention, effort, and stewardship. So here’s your homework:

  1. Write down 7–10 market research questions that would help you understand your ideal client better.

  2. Reach out to 5–10 people to interview or survey this week.

  3. Choose one platform to master, and map out 3–5 pieces of content you can post to nurture instead of just sell.

  4. Pray and ask God to guide you in building a marketing strategy that honors Him and blesses your audience.
