They Are Copying Me, What Do I Do?

Fast followers are a modality that has always existed and will always exist. Big companies have been created by copying other business models. A related term is benchmarking; a usual practice that analyzes the competition to identify areas that we can apply and improve.

According to this article published in Entrepreneur.com, "This tool consists of making a comparison between your business and the competition (both direct and indirect), as well as with leading businesses in other industries or other markets with the intention of discovering and analyzing what their winning strategies are and, if possible, apply them in your own company."

The first thing we need to understand is that there is room for all of us to grow. You and I can do the same thing, but we will never do it the same way. We know that humanly we cannot provide our services to everyone, and I truly believe in the collaboration with other colleagues.

Looking at what others are doing takes away time that we can invest in our projects and reduces our energy. For this reason, we must work on our “unique selling proposition (USP)” and be able to identify what makes us different. Ask yourself, why are clients going to prefer me?

Another aspect that you should work on is your value proposition. The value proposition is the heart of a business model. It encompasses a whole series of functional and emotional benefits that the company brings to the customer and that the latter recognizes as different and unique to the brand with respect to its competition.

If you notice others are copying you, do not be discouraged. Use the opportunity to be more creative. Remember that you should be 10 steps ahead so they cannot be able to reach you. This will surely keep you out of your comfort zone. When you develop strategies beforehand, with the end in mind, you are working with purpose. That is the difference that cannot be copied.

1 Peter 4:10, NIV: "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."
